Don't let the economy give you the boating blues!

As we wait for Congress to make a decision on the “Wall Street Bailout” or which ever term you like to call it, the question in boating industry is the overall economy. New boat sales have declined so much in the past 2 years, many once flourishing boat dealers have closed the doors. Many of the big box marine stores like West Marine and Boater’s World are closing stores. In the grand scheme of the economy, it’s another hit to the U.S.

But how are the consumers affected? If you have a boat you are thinking of getting rid of, there is good news. Used boat sales have greatly increased in relation to new boat sales. First time boat buyers are turning to a used boat in good condition for about half of the cost of a new boat. And in reality, what is fundamental difference between an 06 boat versus an 09 model? Not much.

If you have been eagerly eyeing that new boat, but just can rationalize the cost, think of the less expensive alternative - upgrade your current boat. It won’t feel like the excitement of a new boat, but it can feel close.

Performance - Did you know that there are some minor things you can buy to make your boat perform better? Boat trim tabs can increase your top end speed by up to 5 mph, lower your time to plane, increase handling and increase fuel economy! Getting a new boat prop and upgrading that “stock” prop can also add to the performance of your boat. It will be the same old boat, but it can feel like a brand new one!

Electronics - Still have that old monochrome fish finder from 4 years ago? Surely you’ve heard about all the new technology out there, but why haven’t you pulled the trigger yet? They can be more affordable than you think. Fishing is always more fun with a new toy to use, and with the new technology out there, you can actually catch more fish too!

Safety - Is your boat filled with old, worn life jackets you never wear but know you should? How about new jackets you can hardly tell you’re wearing and take up hardly any space in your boat. Mustang Survival makes automatic inflatables - go overboard, they auto inflate. Or how about a new water sports vest, or one that actually fits?

Water sports - Are you or the kids tired of that patched up tube? Water sports companies have go to great lengths to make of the most exciting towables to date. Take a look and see what is available, there is surely one to catch your eye.

Fishing - Aside from gear and tackle, a trolling motor is a fisherman’s best friend. Technology has greatly what advanced trolling motors can do. The Minn Kota Co Pilot allows you to control your motor right from your fishing rod. The Autopilot is equally as exciting as it delivers infinitely variable steering adjustments for smoother course corrections and tighter heading accuracy.

These were just a few suggestions and ideas to make your boating experience more exciting without the internal need we have to buy a brand new boat. Just make yours better!
